WHY THIS STORY?

Helena Citronovà was deported to Auschwitz in 1942.

Franz Wunsch was smitten the instant he laid eyes on her.

Their tale of love in a place of evil and hatred had to be told.

is the STORY historically factual?

For the most part, yes.

Helena and Franz (Adriana and Mattias in the novel) actually existed.

Most events described in the story are heavily documented.

Many characters are also historical.

WERE HELENA AND FRANZ REALLY IN LOVE?

It is very hard to say. Franz certainly was. Helena has given varying accounts over the years. At the very least she came to cherish whatever it was that bloomed between them. She also exploited it ruthlessly, both to her own benefit and to the benefit of others.

IS THIS A SAPPY LOVE STORY?

Absolutely not.

Yes, love is at the heart of the story.

But Nazis, Auschwitz and WW2 are always in the background.

Romeo and Juliet, this is not.
